The teaching of Mathematics at Marston Moreteyne School aims to ensure all pupils are confident, independent, articulate mathematicians who are enthused to explore, discover, reason and are able to apply their mathematical knowledge and skills in everyday society.

The 2014 National Curriculum for Maths aims to ensure that all children:

• Become fluent in the fundamentals of Mathematics
• Are able to reason mathematically
• Can solve problems by applying their Mathematics

At Marston Moreteyne School, these skills are embedded within Maths lessons and developed consistently over time. We are committed to ensuring that children are able to recognise the importance of Maths in the wider world and that they are also able to use their mathematical skills and knowledge confidently in their lives in a range of different contexts.

We want all children to enjoy Mathematics and to experience success in the subject, with the ability to reason mathematically. We are committed to developing children’s curiosity about the subject, as well as an appreciation of the beauty and power of Mathematics.

We recognise the importance of using manipulatives and representations to effectively teach new mathematical concepts. We use the Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract approach to help learners build strong mental images of the maths they are learning. Concrete objects and manipulatives are used to help the children understand what they are doing, pictorial representations alongside can then be used to help reason and solve problems. The use of concrete and pictorial representations in turn will support children with abstract concepts. All classrooms have a toolkit of concrete resources that can be accessed by the children to support their learning. Our calculation policy models how we use the CPA approach to teach different objectives.
