SMSC-Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Development

Our School Prayer

Intent:

SMSC stands for spiritual, moral, social and cultural development - a key component of our school's Christian Vision - where we have high aspirations, care, kindness and hope for all our children.

"For I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you, not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future."- Jerimiah 29.11

Development in each of these integral areas can be understood as follows:

  • Spiritual: The opportunity to explore beliefs, experience and faiths, feelings and values; enjoy learning about oneself, others and the surrounding world; use imagination and creativity and reflect on experiences.
  • Moral: The opportunity to learn what is right and wrong and respect the law; understand consequences; investigate moral and ethical issues and offer reasoned views.
  • Social: The opportunity to use a range of social skills to participate in the local community and beyond; appreciate diverse viewpoints; participate, volunteer and cooperate; resolve conflict.
  • Cultural: The opportunity to explore and appreciate cultural influences; appreciate the role of Britain’s parliamentary system; participate in cultural opportunities; understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity.

Implementation:

SMSC is embedded in all aspects of our school life, from individual lessons to extra-curricular activities and worship. Within our Creative Curriculum Approach, we put SMSC at the heart of the curriculum by basing its pedagogy, the four cornerstones, on the aspects of SMSC. This ensures that we can plan for, deliver and evidence SMSC in all of our teaching and learning.

Impact:

We ensure that there is always time for reflection and thought at the end of each topic. Our "Express" part of the Curriculum enables our learners to ask questions and develop deeper thinking to embed learning and re-enforce our Christian vision
